In the upper part of the city, at the foot of Santa Barbara Castle, we find the beautiful Santa Cruz quarter. Its streets are narrow and steep, full of old white and blue houses where tiles and balconies are decorated with colorful and creative pots full of plants and flowers hanging that give these streets life and joy, all this makes this neighborhood a lovely place.
From the different viewpoints of the neighborhood you can enjoy one of the best views of the city. We also find in Santa Cruz quarter featuring many bars and restaurants to make a stop and enjoy a good wine or a good tapa.
Santa Cruz quarter at Holy Week Easter
Ermita de Santa Cruz is located on the slopes of Mount Benacantil, in the quaint and picturesque Santa Cruz quarter. Dates from the last third of the XVIII century and was built on Torre de la Ampolla, one of the few remnants of the old medieval walls.
La Ermita is well known for being the point from where starts the Procesión de la Hermandad de la Santa Cruz on Wednesday of Easter, which performs his penance station with four seats:el Cautivo, la Dolorosa, el Descendimiento de la Cruz and el Cristo de la Fe. During these days the neighborhood is crowded to see the bearers moving down their Virgin through the narrow and steep streets, a real spectacle!!!
It is a haven of peace and tranquility, where for the neighbors, the street is the continuation of their houses, where you can rest, you can chat and do social life just like in the old days. An advise: If you visit the Santa Cruz quarter it’s best to wear comfortable shoes, sneakers or flat shoes; for the ladies we recommend not to go with heels as the streets are steep and there are usually lots of stairs to climb.
