L'Ametlla de Mar is a small fishing village of 7000 inhabitants located south of the Costa Dorada in the province of Tarragona. It is one of the most charming villages on the coast, but in turn is one of the most unknown.
La Lonja: at the beginning of the afternoon, around 16.00 pm from Monday to Friday, make sure you spot the arrival of the fishermen to the port that, after a long day of fishing, will make a selection of their catch that will be taken to the fish market to proceed with the auction later. Visiting it, even if you cannot understand a word, it is a unique kind of experience.
GR92: the GR 92 is a long-distance path that begins in the north of Cataluña and ends in Andalucía, so it is also known as Sendero del Mediterráneo. In l'Ametlla de Mar, this path is a spectacle, and one of the most beautiful excursions you can do either alone, with friends or family, as it is not too hard to walk through it. One of the most famous routes along the trail is the route between l'Ametlla de Mar and l'Ampolla, where you will have the chance to walk through beautiful natural landscapes and the most beautiful beaches in the region.
Castillo de Sant Jordi d'Alfama: initially, it was built as a watch tower in the 12th century in order to protect the coast from attacks by pirates and bandits. In the 13th century, under the command of the Templars, the current Castle was built. One of the major curiosities of the place is that it had to be destroyed so that the French troops did not occupy it and later, in 1733, it was reconstructed to watch over the maritime routes. It is one of the most photographed images of the place, since its location, right next to the beautiful beach, is simply spectacular.
Its main attractions are its fantastic beaches with crystalline waters, which are as amazing as the beaches of the Caribbean or Formentera; some of them are wonderful unspoiled coves sheltered by cliffs and vegetation.
This small town holds 15 incredible beaches, some of them of a unique beauty. There is just one urban beach, which is Playa de l'Alguer, which is a charming beach of crescent shape located next to the fishing port, right in the center of the town. But once you go north or south, you can find some of the most beautiful coves, among which we highlight Cala Xelin, Cala Forn, which is a beautiful beach with many services and one of the most famous chiringuitos of the place. Cala Vidre, Cala Calafató, and we cannot forget Playa de Sant Jordi and its imposing Castle.
And one of the most remote beaches, without any kind of service, ideal for those seeking tranquility and for those who enjoy being surrounded by pure nature is Playa de l'Illot.
Tuna Tour: this is one of those activities that are ideal for families. On this fantastic trip, you will aboard a catamaran that will take you to the fish farm while guides will explain you how the tunas are captured. Once you get to the place, you can dive and feed these giants of the sea. You cannot miss this original and unique excursion, only suitable for the most daring.
