Origins of Central Market of Valencia
The origin of the market is found in the Muslim period, in the famous Arrabal de la Boatella, where the market was located. Later came the Christian re-conquest with the occupation, and it was Jaime I who allowed the inhabitants of the city, riding a weekly market in the same place.
The original market was simply made up of tarps and baskets that were mounted and dismounted every day. Where farmers and merchants offered their products (we can imagine that at that time was a place of accused unhealthiness).
It was not until the arrival of Pere el Ceremonioso when the market was given permission to be held on a permanent basis, and with the construction of new Christian walls in 1356 that the market was definitely put inside the city. The market area was very busy and it held many events, from parties to the gallows which were installed in the square. And in 1910 the definitive market that has survived to this day was built. A beautiful modernist work that pays homage to Gothic style.
Be sure to admire the nave of 30 meters high of ceramic decorated with iron and glass.
