The Port of Denia include an important fishing port as well as 2 marinas: Yacht Club and La Marina. La Marina, with its huge yachts, restaurants, pubs and shops have become an attractive leisure and entertainment spot, very pleasant to walk after a day at the beach. On the other side, just behind the harbor we find the Barrio de los Pescadores, also called Baix la Mar, characterized by its humble small cottages where it is a pleasure to wander and get lost in its narrow streets and squares.
From the Port of Denia to the Balearic Islands
This is one of the most important of the east coast, as well as being the link between the mainland and the Balearic Islands, from here depart every summer hundreds of ships heading to the islands, ferry crossings to Ibiza, Formentera, Palma, Ibiza and San Antonio with a duration of 2.30 to Formentera and almost 8 hours to reach Palma.
One of the visits that is worth doing if you are in Denia is a visit to Lonja del Pescado (Fish Market). Approximately at about 16:00h, vessels arrive to the Port of Denia after a hard day’s work. Once there, you can see fishermen going off from their boats loaded with all kinds of fish and shellfish, octopus, monkfish, sole, red shrimp and others that they take to the fish market for sale.
It is an experience to see in person the bustle of the fish market where the frenetic fish auction in which it is virtually impossible to understand anything by the speed at which they speak is performed. It can be witnessed 11 months a year, since for a month they do a mandatory biological stop.This stop is usually the month of may or June.
