The caves are a real natural beauty, certainly one of the major attractions of Mallorca. Located in the turistic locality of Porto Cristo, within the municipality of Manacor, underground, 25m deep, are these fantastic caves holding the largest underground lake in Europe discovered so far. The effect of the water of the Mediterranean sea seeping over the centuries by the subsoil of limestone that covers it, has led to the creation of these caves and shaping each of its cavities.
During the tour to the caves which takes about 70 minutes, we can enjoy four interconnected rooms: la cueva Blanca, la cueva de los franceses, la Negra and la cueva de Luís Salvador that have a total length of 2400m. Throughout the caves we can enjoy wonderful formations of stalactites and stalagmites of strange shapes and large pillars and canvases. These stunning formations with the effects of light and color takes the visitor to an unreal world.
On our visit to the Cuevas del Drach, at about halfway, we can enjoy the beauty of one of the largest underground lake in Europe called Lago Martel, which is named after the discoverer of the caves in 1896, EA Martel. The lake is connected to the Mediterranean so it is slightly salty, it’s 117m long and you can make a small boat trip.
One of the great surprises that these caves offer to visitors is a small classical concert offered several times a day inside the cave in the lake area. The Lake Martel classical music concert has been performed since 1935.
It is undoubtedly the most famous tour of the island and a magical place that cannot be missed on any visit to Mallorca.
