The small rural town of Andratx currently has 10,000 inhabitants and was built 4 km from the coast trying to protect itself from the continuous pirate attacks suffered there in the sixteenth century which led to the building of over 10 watchtowers along its coast.
Strolling through the narrow cobbled streets in the neighborhood of Pantaleu, where the first population that existed in Andratx lived; is a great pleasure, tour the old town streets or visit the Iglesia de Santa María de Andratx as well as Ayuntamiento, el edificio de la Curia, la Torre de So na Gaia y los Molinos de Sa Gaieta which are some of the most significant buildings of the municipality.

One of the highlights of Andratx is the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo en Sa Coma-Andratx located in a building of more than 4000m2 fully integrated into the landscape and in a stunning setting. In this magnificent gallery considered one of the largest and most important of the Balearic Islands you will find works of contemporary art, workshops and exhibitions.
The northern part of the municipality is totally mountainous and rugged, so it is totally depopulated. The villages belonging to the municipality of Andrach lie in its southernmost part and occupy the valleys of the Sierra de Tramontana in which the sea, rain and wind have eroded its wonderful coastline over the centuries creating stunning scenery, great cliffs, coves, beaches and 4 islets; all natural landscapes of great beauty where life is quiet in its picturesque villages. This region has remained for years outside the path of mass tourism of tour operators.

Andrach has one of the Natural Wonders of Mallorca

One of the great attractions of this area is the Parque natural de Sa Dragonera, situated opposite the fishing village of Sant Elm. This natural park is formed by a series of uninhabited protected islets which can be accessed through small ferries leaving from the village of Sant Elm about 700m from the coast. The main Sa Dragonera island owes its name to the hundreds of lizards that inhabit it, that are immediately spotted by tourists on arriving the island. There are several hiking trails to enjoy its scenery, its clear turquoise waters and its sublime views to the island of Mallorca.
