The Sanctuary of Virgen del Castillo was attached to the Castle in the nineteenth century and its construction which is neo-Byzantine style, is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, popularly known by name “Mare de Deu del Castell”. In Valencian, the church was built in her honor, hence the name of the sanctuary, Virgen la Encarnación. Its image is the same as that already worshiped in the chapel of the Castle.
It highlights the main facade, where you can see the bell tower with a dome of glazed tiles. The interior is composed of three naves separated by pillars. The nave is covered by barrel vaults with lunettes. A image of the Virgin can be seen in the presbytery or during the days of the “Baixa de la Mare de Deu” (the descent of the Virgin). The end of the week after Easter, the Virgin is used in the procession to Iglesia dels Sants Joans in the village, so that people have the virgin closer to them for a few days. These are all traditional festivities days.
