Tarragona has a long fishing tradition, documented since the thirteenth century. The Fisherman’s district El Serrallo is the maritime district of Tarragona, a maze of narrow cobbled streets with old, narrow buildings designed in the late eighteenth century by the Board of Port Works. This was done to build the Marina district in the lower area city, near the port of Tarragona and the new railway line. Then, the fishermen living in wooden houses by the sea where they kept their boats, had to move to the remains of Fortin Francolí, an area that was called Seraglio.
Here, typical neighborhoods of old sailor’s atmosphere are still breathing. The lives of many of the inhabitants of this district is strongly linked to the sea, because here, they have the largest fishing fleet of Tarragona and its fish market.
The New El Serrallo district
In recent years, the neighborhood of Serrallo had suffered strong transformations, from being a slob and degraded neighborhood that could even be described as marginalized, to being one of the most visited and popular areas of the city, formed today by large avenues and greenery along the harbor. The coastline is formed by a promenade filled with commercial spaces.
And it is here, in Barrio del Serrallo, where you will find one of the areas with the best cuisine offerings of the city. There are countless restaurants and terraces where you can taste the delicious seafood cuisine with fresh seafood and the best dishes of the area.
